Our Philosophy of Music

We believe the Bible gives the following main purposes for music:

1.   To teach and admonish one another (Col. 3:16)

2.   To glorify and worship the Lord (Heb 13:15)

3.   To motivate, inspire and refresh our spirits in the Lord (I Sam. 16:23)

The world has a differernt philosophy of music.. merely to entertain.. The music that we seek to provide as a ministry to those who would like our assistance is strickly for the three purposes listed above.   The main philosophy of our music and our primary goal is simply to glorify the Lord.   It is for this reason that we make our music available to everyone who could use it for the same purpose.

A vast majority of the songs are based on pure Scripture.   Many are written solely for the purpose of memorization.   The entertainment aspect of the music is subject to the main goal of teaching and instilling into our lives the message of Scripture. Most of the time, when I write a Scripture song, I start out with a text and then completly subjugate the melody and harmony to the text.   Obviously, this was what the Lord wants because we see in the Bible's Hymnal (the book of Psalms), that all that has survived is the text and message. We have no idea what the melody and harmony consisted of. God could have, as easily, preserved the music, as he did the text.   He choose not to because it was not the music that was inspired but the message.

Most contemporary christian composers start out with a catchy melody, harmony and rythmn and then add words that feel right to them. This is following the pattern of the world. It is starting with feeling of flesh and then working up to the spiritual aspect of the music. This music has a great appeal to the flesh but does little for our spirit in the long run. If you are a spiritual leader, a Pastor, or Bible teacher, you need to consider what you are teaching people when you feed people a diet of only this kind of music. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying if people enjoy singing a song, it is wrong. The Bible says to sing Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. There is a place for providing music that appeals to the flesh. What spiritual leader would say don't feed the flesh at all. We would all starve and get sick. The Bible says not to be ruled by the flesh. There needs to be a balance: this is why the Bible says, sing Psalms first, then hymns, then spiritual songs, (Colossians 3:16, Eph. 5:19). Today we sing spiritual songs, then hymns, and rarely if ever do we sing pure Scripture or Psalms. We need a biblical balance: spirit, soul and body music, not body, soul and spirit.

I believe that most composers write music that appeals to the flesh because this music is what sells. Before I was a christian and made a living in the world in the entertainment world we used to call this, the "hook" in the music. A hook is used to bait a fish. As we see from the biblical pattern of the book of psalms if there be any hook in gospel music it should be the message and the text. Jesus said, in John 6:63, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life."

The design of musical instruments and even the development of harmonies and melodies have changed in the milleniums since the Bible was written, but the message has not changed. Jesus said in Matthew 24:35 "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away." So our baisic philosophy of music should be to follow this biblical pattern. We write music with a purpose. That purpose is to teach and admonish, which ultimatley will glorify God. Some of our songs are also written to inspire and comfort. This is theraputic. In the home and also in this devil filled world sometimes we need that, (see I Sam. 16:23, II Kings 3:15).

I have found that once a student in sunday school or church has sung a Scripture Chorus they will not soon forget the words.   This is why the Lord gave us music. Freely use the choruses in family altar situations, sunday school, church or Bible school(s).   You will find that the Scripture taught will be remembered longer than any lesson or teaching that takes place. For this reason, we try to make the music that we set to Scripture as appealing as possible without compromising the message. Music is a tool to an end and not an end in itself. Notice what the Lord told Moses about this:

Deut 31:19 Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.
Deut. 31:21 And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are befallen them, that this song shall testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I sware.
Deut. 31:22 Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel.

What is amazing about this song that Moses wrote is that it had a total of 43 verses. The way we write music today, it would involve writing an oratorio to set all these verses to music. There certainly was something different about the music of his day and our day. No doubt they were able to inculcate a lot more theology in their songs. In fact, Psalm 119 has 176 verses!.. the average hymn that we sing in church has 3-4 verses. That one song would be like singing 50 - 60 Hymns if we used our common style of melody harmony and rythmn! Could you imagine singing Psalm 119 with the style of music that we use today before the sermon on Sunday morning? Expect at least 1 hour for the song to finish.

The point of these examples is that the biblical philosophy of music and our western mentality are, no doubt, different. Because of our musical taste and musical conditioning, I believe the closest thing that we can do to get close to this biblical philosophy that I have outlined is to sing some Scripture Choruses like we have provided in our Free Music page.

Again the Lord told Moses in Deut 31:19

Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths .
Deut 31:21 for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed..
As spiritual leaders this should the purpose behind the gospel music we teach God's people.

I hope that the music we have provided for you will be a help to you to fulfill this goal and might I add be obedient to the command of Colossians 3:16 and Ephsians 5:18-19. Most of the music provided to start out this "Free Music Page" was written for our Church to teach and admonish one another as commanded in the Bible. If these songs will help you to be obedient to this command then I would rejoice.

We will be continually developing and adding to this site. As I come across friends who have written music that I think others would benefit from, I will add these songs to our guest list. We hope to add audio sound tracks tapes and CD's for those who do not read music and need sound track accompaniments. We hope that this service will be a help to your ministry.

God bless you,

As we sing the songs of the Lord together.

Sincerely yours,
Frank Bissol
